North-east Sardinia is the Mediterranean doing an impression of the Caribbean and pulling it off. The La Maddalena archipelago is a maze of pink granite and turquoise shallows where every second cove looks photoshopped; Spargi and Budelli hold the famous ones, but the plain ones would be famous anywhere else. The Costa Smeralda adds the yachts-and-aperitivo end of the spectrum at Porto Cervo, worth one evening of people-watching. Distances are short, shelter is everywhere, and when the mistral pipes up the archipelago itself flattens the sea. You need a permit for the Maddalena park — sort it before the week, not at the ranger boat. Then go get lost in it; that's the whole idea.
