Day 1 / 7
Malinska
1
Day 1

Punat → Malinska

Most crews use this first leg to shake out the boat rather than cover ground. It's only eight miles down Krk's western shore, so there's no rush to leave the base. Malinska has a long pine-shaded waterfront and a small harbour that fills up fast in July, so aim to be tied off by mid-afternoon. The town itself is easygoing. What sells the stop is what sits inland: Vrbnik, the cliff village that grows Žlahtina, Krk's own white. Konoba Nada up there has been cooking for over fifty years and pours wine from its own cellar; the monkfish in Žlahtina sauce is the dish to order. Back at the boat, a quiet swim off Porto Bay before dinner settles everyone into charter rhythm.

Things to do

Taste Žlahtina at Konoba Nada, Vrbnik

Stroll the pine-shaded Malinska waterfront

Swim off Porto Bay before dinner

Ride inland to the Vrbnik cliffs

Mooring tip

Marina Malinska is compact and books out in summer, so reserve ahead. If it's full or you want a quieter night, anchor off Porto Bay just outside and dinghy in.

Opatija
2
Day 2

Malinska → Opatija

Opatija is where nineteenth-century Vienna came to winter, and the town still wears that money well: grand villas, manicured parks, a promenade that runs for miles. You berth at ACI Opatija in Ičići, a couple of kilometres south of the centre and one of the better-sheltered marinas in the northern Adriatic. From there the Lungomare threads the whole coast, twelve kilometres of it, from the fishing hamlet of Volosko down to Lovran. Walk at least the Volosko end. That's where the good seafood is, in small konobas tucked behind the harbour rather than on the tourist strip. Order the fuži with truffle if it's on. Later, a cocktail at Hemingway Bar with the water going pink is a fine way to close the day.

Things to do

Walk the Lungomare from Volosko to Lovran

Eat fuži in a Volosko konoba

Sundowner cocktail at Hemingway Bar

Wander Villa Angiolina's seafront park

Mooring tip

ACI Marina Opatija at Ičići is the working berth here and holds well; the town quay in Opatija itself is short-stay only. Book ACI in high season.

Rijeka
3
Day 3

Opatija → Rijeka

Nobody sails to Rijeka for the postcards. It's a real port, third-largest city in the country, with shipyards, café culture and an edge the polished resorts don't have. The sail in from Opatija takes barely an hour. Berthing is the catch: the city has only a small charter quay near the centre and space is tight, so call ahead or plan to overnight back at Ičići. Once ashore, climb to Trsat castle for the view down over the Rječina gorge and the bay. Then work back down to the Korzo, the pedestrian spine, and the covered fish market off it. Kvarner scampi are the local prize, sweet and small; find them na buzaru at a market-side kitchen and you'll understand the fuss.

Things to do

Climb to Trsat castle for the view

Buy Kvarner scampi at the Dolac market

Coffee and people-watching on the Korzo

Tour the Maritime and History Museum

Mooring tip

Rijeka's central charter quay is small and often full; confirm a spot before you commit to the passage. ACI Opatija at Ičići is a reliable protected fallback for the night.

Crikvenica
4
Day 4

Rijeka → Crikvenica

The run south hugs the Vinodol coast, vineyards and old citrus terraces climbing off the water behind you. Crikvenica grew out of a Roman posting station called Ad Turres, and the ruins never fully left; parts of the old harbour still lie submerged off the Kaštel point, shallow enough to snorkel over on a calm afternoon. The Kaštel itself began as a Pauline monastery in 1412 and is a hotel now, sitting right on the pebble town beach. This is an easy, low-key stop. Provision here if you're running short, since the town has proper shops. For dinner, a konoba plate of škampi na buzaru and a glass of Vinodol white does the job before the longer leg south tomorrow.

Things to do

Snorkel the submerged Ad Turres ruins

Swim off the Kaštel pebble beach

Provision at the town market

Škampi na buzaru at a local konoba

Mooring tip

The marina at Crikvenica is small, so book ahead in season. When it's calm you may anchor off the town's beach, though the bay stays open and is no spot to ride out heavy weather.

Senj
5
Day 5

Crikvenica → Senj

Read the forecast before you slip lines. This is the leg that runs down the Velebit channel, the most bura-prone water in the Adriatic, and Senj catches it worse than anywhere; the town sees strong wind well over a hundred days a year. On a settled morning it's a straightforward twenty-mile reach. When the bura is forecast, it isn't, and the sensible call is to wait a day. Ashore, the Nehaj fortress from 1558 stands on its hill above the port, built by the Uskoks who ran their raiding fleet from here against the Ottomans and Venetians. The museum inside is worth an hour. Down in the old lanes, a bowl of maneštra, the thick local bean-and-vegetable stew, is exactly right after a passage.

Things to do

Tour the Nehaj fortress and its museum

Walk the medieval Uskok old town

Try maneštra bean stew at a konoba

Check the bura forecast before leaving

Mooring tip

Senj's harbour quay is really only short-stay and exposed, so plan your overnight elsewhere and treat any bura forecast as a hard stop. If it's blowing, stay put or run for shelter early rather than push down the channel.

Baska
6
Day 6

Senj → Baška (Krk)

Timing matters more than distance here. The crossing back to Krk is only a dozen miles, but you're cutting across the mouth of the bura channel, so most crews leave early while it's quiet. Baška sits in an amphitheatre of bare grey mountains at the island's southern tip, and the approach alone is worth the passage. Its beach, Vela Plaža, runs close to two kilometres of pale pebble and picks up a swell that swimmers love and skippers should respect at anchor. Behind the town, a marked trail climbs onto the stark limestone plateau where the Bašćanska Ploča was found, one of the oldest surviving texts in Croatian. Book a farmhouse peka in the afternoon and you'll eat lamb under the bell that evening.

Things to do

Swim the two-kilometre Vela Plaža

Hike the trail up the Moon Plateau

See the Bašćanska Ploča cast in town

Order lamb peka at a hillside konoba

Mooring tip

Baška has a small marina plus town quay, so book ahead at peak. Anchoring off the beach works in light air, but the bay is open to the south and southeast, so don't count on it if any swell is running.

Lopar
7
Day 7

Baška (Krk) → Punat

Save the softest swim for last. Lopar, on the northern tip of Rab, has Rajska Plaža, a rare stretch of genuine sand nearly two kilometres long and shelving so gently you can wade a long way out. Anchor off, drop the swim ladder, and let the crew have a slow morning. On the way back you can duck into Rab Town for a short walk under its four campaniles, then point north for home. Punat sits inside one of the largest natural harbours on the coast, almost fully ringed by Krk, which is why the charter base has run here since 1964. Radio ahead for a fuel slot and confirm your berth before the final approach. A last glass of Žlahtina on deck closes the week.

Things to do

Last swim off Lopar's Rajska Plaža

Short walk under Rab Town's campaniles

Radio ahead for a Marina Punat fuel slot

Toast the week with Vrbnik Žlahtina

Mooring tip

Marina Punat is a full-service base with its own yard and fuel quay. Request a fuel slot about a day ahead and confirm your return berth before your final approach, since arrivals bunch up on turnaround days.
