The Sporades never make the posters, which suits everyone who sails there. These are forested islands — pine down to the tide line — scattered across a sea that hosts Europe's oldest marine park, where monk seals still haul out and dolphins work the channels. Skiathos brings the airport and the nightlife; Skopelos brings the Mamma Mia chapel and a harbour town that smells of plums and resin; Alonissos brings the silence. Legs are short, anchorages are sandy, and the meltemi arrives here softer than in the Cyclades. Starting from Volos adds a mainland day across the Pagasitic gulf, calm as a lake. A week here feels longer than it is, in the best way.
